Mercer Timber Products: Flexible & High-Capacity

Built in 1992, Mercer Timber Products is one of the largest sawmills in Germany. Located in Saalburg-Ebersdorf in the border triangle of Bavaria, Saxony, and Thuringia, the company is a prominent employer in the region with approximately 460 employees. With the acquisition of the sawmill by Mercer International Inc. in April 2017, Mercer Timber Products GmbH was established.

Mercer Timber Products manufactures a wide range of high-quality softwood lumber products. We use local raw materials in a sustainable and exemplary manner. As a result, we efficiently and economically serve the diverse needs of our customers around the world. We produce sawn timber of the highest quality and use only wood from sustainably managed forests. In this way, we preserve our natural resources and promote a healthy environment.

The mill is PEFC-certified and a member of the Sustainability Agreement (NAT) in Thuringia. As association work is of great importance to Mercer Timber Products, the company is an active member of the Deutsche Säge- und Holzindustrie Bundesverband e. V. (DeSH) and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Rohholz e.V. (AGR).

Since the takeover by Mercer, extensive investments have been made in the area of the entire production chain and occupational safety. In this way, we are creating sustainable jobs in one of the most modern and efficient sawmills in the world.

Build a Career with In-house Education

Mercer Timber Products attaches great importance to the training and promotion of young talent. We offer our younger generations interesting, flexible, and diverse apprenticeships in a dynamically developing international company.

We are currently training in the following professions (m/f/d) recognized by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce:

The following dual courses of study are also offered:

    • Electrical Engineering – specialization automation
    • Wood Technology

To recruit young talent, Mercer Timber Products specifically goes to schools, attends training fairs, or brings students to the plant to visit the training positions. These visits can grow into internships in order to present the training opportunities available. In February 2019, the company partnered with Mercer Rosenthal for the first time to host Apprenticeship Night. Students and their parents were welcomed to learn more about the apprenticeships offered at Mercer during evening plant tours and information sessions.

In addition, a two-year trainee program for university graduates was launched in 2019. All trainees are assigned to their own mentor who accompanies and supports them during their training and thus promotes further development in the best possible way.

    • Prioritizing Health and Safety

The health and safety of our team members is of the utmost importance to us. Along with the Road to Zero program, in 2019 Friesau established a company-wide health management system. This system includes a health team that organizes mill events focusing on information and activities promoting health and wellness in our team members. Our first “Family Hiking Day” took place at the Orangerie Ebersdorf where our team members and their families had a lovely day of socializing and discovery while hiking the beautiful area we call home.

Fire prevention and protection are other topics of high importance at Friesau. For this reason, we have set up a firefighting team with the appropriate equipment and technology for our mill. This team currently consists of 32 volunteers, some of whom are active members of another voluntary fire brigade and support our firefighting team in the community as well. In addition to the team, we have our own firefighting vehicle with which we are able to reach and fight incipient fires on the entire company premises in a short period of time.
